Production

The second largest producer of salmon and trout in the world.

Lerøy Seafood Group ASA (LSG) is the second largest producer of salmon and trout in the world. The main share of production takes place in Norway, but LSG also has production in Scotland with its 50% shareholding in Scottish Seafarm.

LSG has distributed production throughout three regions in Norway, with the main business in Hordaland, Trøndelag/Møre og Romsdal and in Troms. In all these regions, we have established the infrastructure required for optimal operations in terms of smolt production, locations for producing and slaughtering fish for consumption and processing plants. Our production of roe is provided by our wholly-owned broodstock company, Aakvik Settefisk AS, located in Halsa. LSG`s production plants are located in rural areas, and we are a major employer in numerous small communities along the coast of Norway.

The value chain for salmon and trout production is relatively long when compared with other production of foods. It also requires a high level of control, from roe stage to finished product.

Our roe production represents a relatively minor part of LSG`s turnover, but is the starting point for our finished products. LSG selects broodstock (parent fish) by applying in-depth criteria. This results in the production of up to 100 million eggs which form the basis for smolt production in the LSG system. The end product is a wide range of fish products for consumers to enjoy. Our products are ont only full of flavour, they are also extremely good for your health.

LSG`s smolt production is distributed over a number of smolt plants in different regions. Smolt is produced in land-based plants which mainly use fresh water as their water source. LSG has a production capacity of 35.7 million smolt. Smolt become fish when they are ready to be released to salt water. Salmon and trout live in fresh water for a period of 8 to 15 months.

When the smolt is ready for life at sea, it is transported in fish carrying vessels to carefully selected locations. Good offshore locations with the correct flow of water and correct temperature and degree of exposure to weather and wind are essential factors for LSG. In all three regions, LSG has established excellent locations for farming salmon and trout. The fish are kept in the sea farms for on average 16 months before they are ready for slaughter and processing.

LSG has four slaughtering plants and two processin plants in Norway. The fish are sold as gutted fish to the fish industry in more than 70 different countries, or are processed as fillets, portions or smoked fish at our own processing plants in Norway and abroad.
